About this place
A meal at Yuzu in Ogikubo begins by surveying the daily offerings written on the blackboard and menu. The restaurant's teishoku format lets guests assemble a personal set meal by selecting either 2 or 3 dishes from a broad repertoire. Options span sashimi, braised home-style simmered dishes, grilled fish, deep-fried items, and hamburg steaks, making it simple to tailor the meal to whatever sounds best that day.
Among the popular choices is niku dofu, where tender beef and tofu soak up a savoury-sweet simmering broth that pairs naturally with bowls of white rice. Maguro natto is another fixture, combining diced tuna with fermented soybeans and an egg yolk meant to be stirred together and spooned over rice. Diners can round out their tray with comforting mains such as braised hamburg steak dressed in a tangy tomato-based sauce, tender fried horse mackerel, or crisp pieces of Japanese fried chicken.
The modest interior includes counter seats, small tables, and a raised koagari seating area, creating an unhurried setting well suited to solo dining or quiet small groups. Beyond daytime set meals, the space works nicely in the evening for pairing small plates with a bottled beer. Payment is cash only, so it is best to have coins or notes on hand when visiting.
